Bio

Adam Riches (b. 1983, Ipswich, UK) is a British painter and draughtsman whose practice centres on expressive, monochromatic portraiture and psychologically charged figurative works. He lives and works in Suffolk, UK.

Riches’ work is defined by a distinctive visual language in which stylised, often tense or introspective figures emerge through dense, energetic mark-making. Ranging from furious, impulsive gestures to quiet, melancholic stillness, his drawings and paintings reflect a sensitive engagement with the complexities of the human condition.

Working in both pen on paper and oil on canvas, Riches explores the fragile boundaries of human behaviour. His practice examines emotional tension, vulnerability, and the subtle — or sometimes extreme — responses that arise within interpersonal relationships. Themes of frailty, volatility, and fallibility recur throughout his work, revealing an ongoing enquiry into the instability and depth of the human psyche.

Riches has participated in numerous international exhibitions and artist residencies, and his work is held in private collections throughout the UK, Europe, the USA, and Asia.
